Nat Turner’s Rebellion–what happened
- group of Virginia slaves who went from farm to farm
- killed slave owners & their families
- killed about 60 people (men, women, & children)
- Turner hid in woods for 6 weeks
- rebel slaves all hung

- slave owners feared for their lives–couldn’t sleep
- whites retaliated by killing 100 slaves & free blacks
- passed laws forbidding blacks gathering in public places or going to church
- speaking against slavery became illegal in Virginia

North

- used many immigrants to work in factories
- manufacturing was biggest part of economy
- used Southern cotton to make clothes
- shipped cotton all around the world

- some thought slaves were better off than Northern immigrants working in factories
