chapter 14 Flashcards
ANS is part of the
PNS
ANS sometimes called
involuntary nervous system
functions of ANS
- function independently and continuously
-no conscious effect - control visceral activities
controls activities to maintain homeostasis - responds during time of emotional stress or physical activity
how does the ANS control visceral activities
regulating
- smooth muscles
cardiac muscles
various glands
sympathetic
fight or flight - mobilizes body for action
parasympathetic
rest and digest- conserves energy
agonists
if sympathetic stimulates the gland to secrete the parasympathetic inhibits the glands secretion
sympathetic divsion
OoF- thoracolumbar region of the spinal cord
Length of fiber- short preganglionic and long postganglionic
location of ganglia- close to spinal cord
parasympathetic division
OoF- brain and sacral spinal cord
Length of fibers- long preganglionic and short postganglionic
location of ganglia- in the visceral effector organs

skipped slide 7 ask about them and 8
what largely controls ANS
brain and spinal cord
helps regulate body temp., hunger, thirst, water and electrolyte balance by influencing autonomic pathways
hypothalamus
what controls ANS during emotional distress
limbic system and cerebral cortex
sympathetic fiber exhibit sympathetic tones
- increase respiratory and heart rate
- raise BP by constricting vessels
- lower BP by dilating vessels
- inhibit digestion and elimination
