Chapter 14 Flashcards
Work
The product of force and distance
Joule
The SI unit of work, equal to 1 newton-meter
Power
The rate of doing work
Watt
The SI unit of power, equal to one joule per second
Machine
A device that changes a force
Input force
The force exerted from a machine
Input distance
The distance through which the input force acts in a machine
Work input
The work done on a machine as the input force acts through the input distance
Output force
The force exerted from a machine
Output distance
The distance the output force exerted
Work output
The output once multiplied by the output distance
Mechanical advantage
Of a machine is the number of times that the machine increase an input force
Actual mechanical advantage
The mechanical advantage determined by measuring the actual forces acting on a machine, this equals the ratio of the output force into the input force
Ideal mechanical advantage
Of a machine is the mechanical advantage in the absence of friction
Efficiency
The percentage of the work input that becomes work output in a machine
