Tariff Acts of 1828 and 1832
Tariffs made in US. North favored these tariffs because it forced Americans to buy products made in the North; South was against it because they felt the laws were unconstitutional, feared other countries would not buy their cotton, and it raised the price on goods from factories. John C Calhoun called for South states to declare the tariffs null and void, causing a lowering in price in 1832.
Nullification Crisis
Caused by higher taxes on imports. Though Jackson lowered the tariffs in 1832, the South felt it was still too high. They tried to nullitfy the tariff laws. Jackson passed a bill in response that would allow him to use force to collect tariffs. SoCal backed off
Bank of US and Jackson’s views on it
The bank was partly owned by the federal government and had a monopoly on federal deposits.
Jackson thought the bank benefited rich eastern depositors at the expense of farmers/workers, as well as smaller state banks. He felt that the bank stood in the way of opportunity for capitalists in the West and other regions. He also distrusted the bank’s president, Nicholas Biddle.
