cabinet
a group of presidential advisers not mentioned in the constitution, although every president has had one, today the cabinet is composed of 14 secretaries, the attorney, the general, and others designated by the president
independent agencies
anything that isnt cabinet departments, regulatory agency, or government commission

discretionary authority
An agency’s ability to decide whether or not to take certain courses of action when implementing existing laws.

U.S. government oversight agency responsible for regulating the securities markets and protecting investors.
regulatory agencies
they police businesses, corporations, and the government. they make sure companies and corporations are following the laws and act as watchdogs.
iron triangle
the policy-making relationship among congressional committees, the bureaucracy, and interest groups.
street-level bureaucrats
bureaucrats that deal directly with the people like teachers and police officers
merit principle
a principle that all appointments and promotions must be made based strictly on the employee’s ability to do the job
standard operating procedures (SOPs)
set of procedures that agencies use to make decision
regulation
a set of requirements issued by a federal government agency to implement laws passed by Congress
deregulation
the reduction or elimination of government power in a particular industry, usually enacted to create more competition within the industry
bureaucracy
all of the agencies, departments, offices, and bureaus of the executive branch. they implement and enforce the laws and responsibilities of the executive branch
