Chapter 13- Spectroscopy Flashcards
What is Nuclear Magnetic Resonance? (NMR)
Tells about the carbon skeleton and environments of hydrogens that are attached.
What is Infrared Spectroscopy (IR)?
Reveals the presence of signals and the absence of key functional groups.
What is ultraviolet light spectroscopy (UV-VIS)?
Probes electron distribution especially in conjugated pi electron systems.
What is Mass Spectrometry?
Gives molecular weight and formula.
What is the relationship between photon and it’s frequency?
A photon is directly proportional to its frequency.
What is the relationship between frequency and wavelength?
Frequency is Inversely proportional to wavelength. The greater the frequency the shorter the wavelength.
What is the relationship between energy and frequency?
Energy is directly proportional to frequency.
What is the consonant for speed of light? (C)
3.0 x 10^8 m/
What is Resonance?
Resonance is the transfer of energy between two objects.
Electromagnetic Radiation
Has properties of particles and waves. Particles are called photons.
* Travels at the speed of light.
A Photon
Possess an amount of energy referred to as a quantum.
Equation for the energy of a Photon
E=hv
Planck’s Constant (h)
6.63 X 10^-34 J*s
What is the equation to find the speed of light (c), frequency (v), and wavelength (λ)?
C=vλ
1H NMR Spectroscopy
Depends on absorption of energy when nucleus of atom is excited from its lowest energy spin states to the next state.
* Tell about the environments of hydrogens in a molecule
