Chapter 13: Sound Flashcards
What is sound?
A form of energy that is transferred from one point to another as a longitudinal wave
What is compressions?
Regions where air pressure is higher than the surrounding air pressure
What is rarefactions?
Regions where air pressure is lower than the surrounding air pressure
Transmissions of sound
Speed of sound in gas < Speed of sound in liquid < Speed of sound in solid
What is an echo? Uses?
The repetition of a sound due to the reflection of sound
Measures large distances
Detect the location of objects
What is pitch?
Pitch is related to the frequency of a sound wave
Higher pitch, higher frequency
More wave, higher pitch
What is loudness?
Loudness is related to the amplitude of a sound wave
The larger the amplitude, the louder the sound
Higher amplitude, more loud
Reverberation
Reflected sounds that cannot be heard as separate sounds but prolong with the original sound
Vacuum pump switched on
When the vacuum pump is switched on, the sound of the bell becomes softer and softer until you can no longer hear it
Why is the electric bell hung by rubber bands
Rubber band is a soft material which can absorb vibrations of the bell. This minimises the transmission of sound through other mediums than air
