Chapter 1.3 Separating Mixtures Flashcards
Compound VS Mixture
Compound: have a fixed composition
Must use chemical reactions to separate
There ARE chemical bonds between atoms
Mixture: no fixed composition
Can use physical means
NO chemical bonds
Physical means (4)
Filtration
Crystallisation
Distillation
Chromatography
Filtration
Separates soluble substances from insoluble
Using filter paper and funnel
(Dry the residue eg sand using a paper towel or oven )
Crystallisation
Use a Bunsen burner and heat the salt solution using an evaporating dish above a water bath.
When crystal form the solution is saturated
Let it dry naturally
Pat crystals dry
Distillation (eg to get drinking water from sea water)
A solution is heated and boiled to evaporate the solvent
The vapour enters the condensing tube
The water jacket around the tube acts as a coolant
The vapour is condensed
And collected
Mixture (define)
A mixture is made up of 2 or more substances that are NOT chemically bonded together.
