Chapter 13: Plant Systems Flashcards
What is xylem?
Plant tissue responsible for the transport of weater and mineral nutrients from the roots to the leaves
What is phloem?
Plant tissue that transports sugars (sucrose) and other photosynthetic products to where they are needed
What are the 2 systems in plants?
- Shoot system: All the plant parts above the ground (leaves, stem, flowers, seeds). Responsible for the transport of resources, absorbtion of oxygen and CO2, reproduction and photosynthesis.
- Root system: Below ground, responsoble for absorbing water and nutrients from the soil.
What is root hair and what does it do?
A tube like growth of a root epidermal cell that increases surface area, responsible for absorbing water and nutrients
What are sieve tude cells?
Long tubular plant cells that are in phloem, they join together to form sieve tubes (where augar and other solutes travel)
What are stomata?
The openings in leaves that control the movement of gases in and out of the plant
What are guard cells and their function?
Paris of cells that open and close the stomata to control the entry and exit of gases.
What are 3 functions of roots?
- Absorb water and minerals from the soil
- Support and anchor the plant
- Main storage tissue
What is absorbtion?
The movement of water and dissolved substances into a cell, organ or organism
