Chapter 13- Meiosis And Sexual Life Cycles Flashcards
what are genes?
Coded information in hereditary units
What is genetics?
Study of heredity
What are genetic links to parents?
Genes we inherit from mothers and fathers
What is heredity?
Transmission of traits from one generation to the next
What is DNA?
Polymer of 4 nucleotides that genetic programs are written on
What is a Gamete?
Transfers genes from one generation to the next [sperm and egg]
What are Somatic Cells?
All cells in the body except gametes
What is a Locus?
Genes specific location along the chromosome
What is Asexual reproduction?
A single individual as a parent and passes [exact] copies of all it’s genes to the offspring
How do eukaryotic organisms reproduce?
Asexually by miotic cell division here DNA is distributed equally to two daughter cells
What can some multicellular organisms do?
Reproduce asexually
What is a clone?
A group of genetically identical individuals that are the direct effect if asexual reproduction
What is sexual reproduction?
2 parents that have an offspring. The offspring has 2 different sets of genes
What is a life cycle?
Generation to generation sequence of stages in the reproductive history of an organism
What are sister chromatids?
2 copies of 1 chromosome
