What are the 3 branches of the US government?
Legislative, Executive, and Judicial
Who is the Head of the Executive Branch?
The President
What is the President’s main job, as dictated by Congress?
To enforce the laws Congress makes and has made
Can the President make laws?
Trick question. The answer is both yes and no. The president has a light duty in creating laws by pressuring Congress into those making laws
What are the expressed powers of the president as dictated by the Constitution?
Military (commands our military)
Judicial (appoints judges within the Federal Courts and can grant Pardons for crimes without a reason)
Diplomatic (Chief Diplomat, influences the control of other countries and hosts other nation’s leaders)
Executive (leads our country and enforces its laws)
Legislative (Vetoes laws and pressures Congress)
What are the Implied Powers of the President?
Powers not directly stated by the Constitution. An example would be executive orders, like when Obama sent 30,000 troops to fight in Afghanistan
What are Executive Orders?
Has the “Effect of a Law”. Congress cannot override an executive order. Congress must pass a new law to override an executive order.
Name the roles of the President
Chief of State (acts on behalf of all Americans) Chief Executive (“boss” of the executive branch) Chief Diplomat (manages relations with other countries) Commander in Chief (in charge of the military) Chief Legislator (legislative powers) Party Chief (leader of the political party) Chief Jurist (has judicial responsibilities)
What are delegated powers?
Powers that Congress gives to the President when they create a new agency in order to fulfill their missions
What is a Cabinet?
A head of a major executive branch department (Justice Department, Department of Defense, etc.)
What is the White House Staff?
Personal advisers to the President
What are the two roles of the Vice President?
To oversee Congress and to take over in case the President is incapacitated (dies)
What is the role of the First Spouse (the 1st Lady)?
It varies, but mostly performs ceremonial duties.
Who is in charge of the Department of Justice?
Attorney General
