Q

what happens if you heat a metal rod at one end

A

the free electrons at the hot end gain kinetic energy and move faster, these elestrons diffuse and collide with other free electrons and ions in the cooler part of the metal.

Q

what is convection

A

circulation of a fluid (liquid or gas) caused by heating it, only occurs in liquids and gases

7
Q

why do fluids rise when heated

A

-the particles move around and move apart, taking up more space, thus the density of the fluid decreases, bceause the same mass of the fluid now occupies a much bigger volume, as the fluid cools it becomes more dense and sinks

9
Q

cooling of a liquid by evaporation…

A

is caused by faster moving particles escaping from the liquid
-the faster particles have more kinetic energy break away from the attraction of the other particles at the surface and escape the liquid
-after they leave the liquid is cooler because the average kinetic energy of the particles left has decreased

13
Q

the greenhouse effect

A

-earths atmosphere acts like a green house
-short wavelength infrared radiation from the sun can pass through glass and warm the objects inside the greenhouse
-infrared radiation from these warm objects is trapped inside the glass because the objects emit infrared radiation of longer wavelengths that cant pass through the glass

16
Q

why cant dark, matt surfaces reflect much infrared radiation but absorb it

A

because matt surfaces has lots of cavities and imperfections

17
Q

the rate of energy transfer to or from and object depends on?

A

-the shape, size and type of material
-the nature of the surface that the object is in contact with
-the temperature difference between the object and its surroundings

18
Q

the vacuum flask

A
  • the vacuum between the 2 walls of the container prevents energy transfer by convection or conduction betwene the walls
    -glass is a poor conductor
-glass surface is silvered to reduce radiation from the outer wall
-the spring supporting the double walled container is made of plastic, good insulator
-plastic cap stops cooling by evaporation, stop water vapor loss, energy transfer by conduction is cut down cus its made from plastic
19
Q

gases expand..

A

30 times more on heating than liquids and solids

20
Q

applications of expansion by heating

A

-glass thermostats
-liquid in glass thermostats
