Chapter 13 - Electric circuits Flashcards
What is current?
The flow of electric charge
What is 1A equal to?
1A = 1C/s
I = q/t
What is Ohm’s Law?
I = ΔV/R
The electric current flowing through a given portion of a circuit is directly proportional to the voltage difference across that portion and inversely proportional to the resistance
What is the electromotive force?
EMF (ϵ) is the amount of energy (E) provided by the battery to each coulomb of charge (Q) passing through
What’s the equation to calculate the total resistance in a parallel circuit?
1/R(T) = 1/R(1) + 1/R(2) + 1/R(3) …
What is 1 kilowatt-hour in joules?
3.6 million joules
What is direct current (dc)?
Direct current implies that the current flows in a single direction from the positive terminal of a battery or power supply to the negative terminal
What is alternating current (ac)?
Alternating current continually reverses its direction, it flows first in one direction, then in the other, then back again
What is the shape of electric current as a function of time for an alternating current?
A sinusoidal curve
How is the effective current or rms current obtained?
By squaring the current, averaging this value over time, and taking the square root of the result
What shape do we get by plotting voltage across an electrical outlet as a function of time?
A sinusoidal curve
