Chapter 13: Cold Blooded Vertebrates Flashcards
The connective tissue that forms part of the strong supporting structures of vertebrates
Bone
A flexible supporting tissue that makes up part or of of some animals’ skeletons
Cartilage
Able to maintain a constant body temperature by internal means; warm-blooded
Endothermic
Not able to maintain a constant body temperature by internal means; cold blooded
Ectothermic
An internal skeleton found in vertebrates and usually made of cartilage and bone
Endoskeleton
A vessel that carries blood away from the heart
Artery
A vessel that carries blood towards the heart
Vein
A heart that contains different places to pump blood
Chambered heart
The body system composed of the heart, blood vessels, and blood that transports substances to and from cells
Circulatory system
A system of organs that work together to obtain oxygen from the air and eliminate carbon dioxide from the body
Respiratory system
A group of tissues and organs that work together to break down an organism’s food into substances it can use
Digestive system
The structures or organs that filter wastes out of the body
Excretory system
The part of the nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord
Central nervous system
The part of the nervous system consisting of sensory receptors, sensory organs, and the nerves that connect to the central nervous system
Peripheral nervous system
A method of external fertilization in which the female lay eggs that are fertilized by the male
Spawning
The muscle that separates the thorax from the abdomen in mammals and humans and that aids in breathing
Diaphragm
A respiratory structure in fish and other aquatic organisms the exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide in the water
Gills
An organ that exchanges gases between the atmosphere and the blood
Lungs
The organ that produces bile, helps regulate substances in the blood, and stores vitamins and minerals
Liver
An organ found in most vertebrates that filters wastes from the blood
Kidney
A membrane over the opening to the middle ear that sound waves cause to vibrate
Tympanic membrane
A part of the digestive tract the connect the pharynx to the stomach
Esophagus
A sac-like portion of the digestive tract that performs mechanical and chemical digestion
Stomach
A sac underneath the liver that stores bile
Gallbladder
The long and tubular organs in which most of the digestion and absorption of food occurs
Small and large intestines
An air-filled organ on many bony fish that helps then float at a certain depth
Swim bladder
An organ that temporarily stores the fluid wastes from the blood
Urinary bladder
Tube that carries urine from a kidney to the urinary bladder
Ureter
