Q

What is paper chromatography?

A

The stationary phase is paper and has an origin (line with substances to separate). Stationary phase is added to container with mobile phase in it

Q

What is thin-layer chromtography?

A

Stationary phase is glass or plastic which is covered in mobile phase. It is more efficient then paper

Q

What is column chromatography?

A

It uses a column with the stationary phase of aluminium oxide or silica (sand like texture, compacted so sample will separate). The mobile phase is added and once soaked the sample is added.

Q

What is gas chromatography?

A

The mobile phase is a gas, the sample is vaporised and combined and carried through a column compacted of the stationary phase. This is all done in an oven

Q

High performance liquid chromatography?

A

Mobile phase is a liquid, sample is injected and they move through a column at a specific flow rate. The column is filled with a solid with a high surface area. As it moves through, it separated and detected by a detector
