Chapter 13 BIO 200 Flashcards
Define Emergent Properties (Along with Ex.)
Components in a complex that work together to Operate a system that would not be expected based on the functions of those components or properties. (Ants and the ant colony)
Why is O2 (oxygen) important?
It is the final electron acceptor in the ETC in order to make ATP.
Define the Importance in red blood cells in relation to O2.
Red blood cells carry more oxygen molecules that the other properties of blood (Plasma, WBC’s)
Why is Hemoglobin more useful than water in blood?
Less O2 concentration is required to increase O2 saturation making it faster to reach close to Max O2 Capacity
What happens when O2 attaches to the binding site of the Hemoglobin Molecule?
Affinity is gained once O2 attaches to one binding site of Hemoglobin making it less difficult for O2 to attach to Hemoglobin in the other binding sites of the same molecule.
What structure is Hemoglobin?
Quaternary Structure
What is Hemoglobin?
An iron containing protein that carries oxygen into the blood.
What is the difference in oxygen concentration in the lungs than in the muscles/tissue?
Oxygen concentration is higher in the lungs and lower in muscle since muscle cells use up oxygen making its oxygen concentration lower.
