Chapter 13 Flashcards
What are hydrocarbons?
Hydrocarbons are compounds consisting of carbon (C) and hydrogen (H) only, bonded together covalently
e.g. coal, natural gas
important as fuels and feedstock for the chemical industry.
What are three sources of hydrocarbons?
coal, petroleum and natural gas
What are hydrocarbons composed of?
They are compounds consisting of carbon (C) and hydrogen (H) only, bonded together covalently
What are hydrocarbons used for?
They are important as fuels and feedstock for the chemical industry.
How are coal, petroleum and natural gas formed?
They are formed from the compacted remains of dead plants of animals which have been fossilised
What are crude oil and natural gas made out of?
Dead marine animals and plants
What are sources of methane?
Decomposing marine animals and plants
Where does anaerobic decay take place?
animal waste, vegetation, rubbish dumps
What are the hazards of methane production?
It is extremely explosive
What is crude oil an example of?
a hydrocarbon
What is crude oil?
Crude Oil is a fossil fuel and formed from the bodies of tiny sea creatures that died millions of years ago, as the layers of mud and slit grew thicker over the years, the decay caused by bacteria slowly turned these bodies into crude oil and natural gas.
What is crude oil formed from?

How is crude oil separated into useful mixtures?
It is separated into a number of useful mixtures through a process called Fractional Distillation
What is organic chemistry?
The chemistry of carbon and carbon based compounds
