A

A slave whose owner was an army officer from Missouri, who sued him for his freedom. Dred Scott was taken by his owner from Missouri to the Northwest territory by the Missouri compromise. After his owner died, Scott sued for his freedom saying saying that he should be free because he had lived in a free territory

A

The Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Roger B. Taney, said that Scott laws an enslaved person, who had no rights to bring a lawsuit. They also said that slaves were property, without due process, or a trial. Also, Congress did not have the power to prohibit slavery in any territory

A

Supreme Court decision further divided the country. Many Southerners felt that the decision proved their belief that nothing could legally stop the spread of slavery. Now slave owners could legally take their slaves into a Free State or territory, without the fear of their slaves being taken
