Chapter 1.3 Flashcards
Arguments based on math
Pure arithmetic/geometric composition/measurement
Inductive argument
Resting on probabilistic reasoning improbable that conclusion is false If premises is true
Arguments from definition
Depends on definition of word/phrase used in premise or conclusion
Categorical syllogism
(2p 1c) each statement begins with … “All” , “no” , “some”
Hypothetical syllogism
Condition (if, then)
Disjunctive syllogism

Prediction
From our knowledge is to claim about the future
Argument from analogy
Depends on existence of 2 similar things
Generalization
Knowledge of a selected sample to some claim about a whole group
Arguments based on signs
Proceeds from knowledge of a sign to a claim about the thing it symbolizes
Argument from authority

From knowledge of a condition based on common knowledge (me)
Particular statement
Proposition/statement that makes a claim about one or more members of a class
General statement
Makes a claim about all the members of a class
