Chapter 12 - Waves Flashcards
Describe how longitudinal waves are transmitted
Give an example
Oscillations parallel to the energy transfer
E.g. Sound waves
Describe how transverse waves are transmitted
Give an example
Oscillations perpendicular to the energy transfer
E.g. EM waves
Define wavelength
Distance between 2 points on a wave.
Define amplitude
The maximum height of an oscillation
Define frequency
Number of waves passing a point per second
Define period
Time taken for wave to pass a point
What is the Law of Reflection?
Angle of reflection (r) = Angle of incidence (i)
When is a wave able to reflect?
When a wave hits a boundary between 2 mediums.
Define refraction
When a wave changes direction while passing through 2 mediums.
What happens to light as it speeds up or slows down?
If light speeds up, it bends away from the normal.
As it slows down, it bends towards the normal.
