Capitalism
It is an economic and political system where a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for money, instead of the state.
Imperialism
The extension of a nation’s power over other lands.
Protectorate
A political unit that depends on another government for its protection.
Colony
It is a territory under the political control of a state.
Exploit
It is to utilize for profit.
Indirect Rule
A colonial government in which local rulers are allowed to maintain their positions of authority and status.
Direct Rule
Colonial government in which local elites were removed by a new set of officials brought from the colonizing country.
Annex
To incorporate into an existing political unit, such as a city or country.
Indigenous
People who are native to a region.
Boer
A farmer who lived in Southern Africa during the 18th century, as well as the ones who left the colony during the 19th century to settle elsewhere.
Sepoy
An Indian soldier hired by the British East India Company to protect the company’s interests in the region.
Viceroy
A governor who ruled as a representative of a monarch.
Dollar Diplomacy
Diplomacy that seeks to strengthen the power of a country or effect it’s purposes in foreign relations by the use of its financial resources.
