Chapter 12 The Cell Cycle Flashcards
In 1855, Rudolf Virchow, a German physician, put it this way:
“Where a cell exists, there must have been a preexisting cell, just as the animal arises only from an animal and the plant only from a plant.”
He summarized this concept with the Latin saying “Omnis cellula e cellula,” meaning
“Every cell from a cell.”
The continuity of life is based on the reproduction of cells, or
cell division
When a prokaryotic cell divides, it is actually reproducing, since the process gives rise to a
new organism (another cell).
multicellular eukaryotes, cell division enables each of these organisms to develop from a
single cell—the fertilized egg.
cell division continues to function in renewal and repair in fully grown multicellular eukaryotes, replacing cells that
die from accidents or normal wear and tear.
For example, dividing cells in your bone marrow continuously make
new blood cells
sea urchin development, biologist have learned a lot about fertilization and embryonic development by observing and experimenting with
sea urchins
sea urchin eggs are fertilized
externally after the animals release their gametes into the water
fertilization and subsequent development are similar to the
changes that occur in the early in the early embryos of mammals
but they are much easier to observe in
sea urchin embryos
The cell division process is an integral part of the ______________, the life of a cell from the time it is first formed during division of a parent cell until its own division into two daughter cells.
cell cycle
Passing identical genetic material to cellular offspring is a crucial function of
cell division
