Chapter 12 Sound Flashcards
What are compressions in waves?
Compressions are regions where particles are pushed closer together, resulting in higher pressure.
What are rarefractions in waves?
Rarefactions are regions where particles are pulled further apart, resulting in lower pressure.
Are sound waves transverse or longitudinal?
Sound waves are propagated as longitudinal waves whose
particles vibrate parallel to the wave motion direction.
Do sound waves travel faster in solid, liquid or gas? and why?
solid. when a vibration occurs by sound, molecules in the medium start to vibrate and transmits that energy through other molecules. the distance between molecules in the solid medium are the smallest.
do sounds travel in a vaccum?
nuh uh it needs a medium, the less dense the better.
what is an echo in physics terms?
a reflected sound wave
what is the formule for speed of sound?
Speed of sound = distance/time which is also equals to distance by echo to surface and back/echo time
How do you determine the loudness of a wave
its amplitude
how do you determine the pitch of the wave
its frequency
