Chapter 12 - Protozoa Flashcards
Classification of Protozoa
Protozoan - “First Animal”
Domain (Eukarya) Kingdom (Protista) Subkingdom (Protozoa)
Characteristics of Protozoa
Unicellular, Eukaryotic, Motility, Some parasitic (10-50µm) - Easily seen with compound (light) microscope
Protozoa get food from outside their body by feeding on Plants, bacteria and animal debris
Heterotrophic
Ciliates take in food by waving their cilia toward a stomach like opening called
Cytostome
All protozoa digest food in stomach like compartments called
Vacuoles
Motile and feeding stage of Protozoa that require water and food
Trophozoite (vegetative)
Protozoa are dormant and resting in what stage. This allows parasites to survive outside a host
Cyst (oocyst)
3 Types of Asexual Reproduction of Protozoa
Binary fission / Schizogony (Multiple fission) / Budding
Sexual reproduction of Protozoa
Conjugation (genetic exchange)
only pathogenic amoeba found in human intestine that causes amoebic dysentery
Entamoeba histolytica
Cytoplasmic structures that extend for movement and food
Pseudopods
What Protozoa are Characterized by special organelles at apex of their cells
Apicomplexa (Plasmodium)
Anopheles mosquito the definitive (Sexual) host of causative agent of malaria
Plasmodium vivax (also P. falciparum)
Where does Plasmodium vivax reproduce Asexual
in humans (intermediate host)
Apicomplexa Infection transmitted by fecal-oral route and causes gastrointestinal illness with watery diarrhea
Cryptosporidium (disease Cryptosporidiosis)
