What are geographical indications (GI) in France?

A

PDO wines: AOP or AOC (older, but still common). Each year winemaker makes a decision which appellation he wants to use
PGI wines: Indication géographique protégée (IGP). Vin de Pays (VdP) also often used
Vin de France: wines without GI
