chapter 12, interactions within ecosystems Flashcards
what are the environmental factors that affect survival?
pH, temperature, salinity, availability of water
what are the two types of characteristics?
behavioural and physical
why do we need to reduce our waste/save resources? (ni/cs)
earth has limited resources. fossil fuels will not be able to supply our energy needs forever and other resources will also keep depleting. as living things are closely connected to one another and their environment, our daily actions can impact our environment and affect the survival of other living things.
what are our different actions that can affect the environment?
wasting food – growing crops and livestock for food requires water, energy, minerals in the soil, and other resources
using more electricity – in sg, it is obtained by burning natural gas which is a limited resource that can run out
using more water – although much of earth is covered in water, less than 1% of its water is considered fresh water, thus, it is a limited resource.
creating excessive waste – more waste needs to be disposed of. improper disposal of waste pollutes the air, water, and land
what can we do to cope with the wastage/use of resources?
reducing the use of fossil fuels – taking transport or walking instead, using energy-efficient appliances.
reducing consumption – minimising the use of paper, reusing items and recycling (reduce deforestation)
introducing environmentally friendly practices – initiatives like byob encourage us to be more envi friendly – reduce emission.
reforestation – protects soil, storing carbon. photosynthesis
