Chapter 12 - Fluid Mechanics Flashcards
What is density?
Mass per unit volume.
Formula for density?
P=m/V
What is pressure?
Normal force per unit area.
What is pascals law of pressure?
States that pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished to every portion of the fluid.
What is absolute pressure?
The total pressure in a fluid.
What is gauge pressure?
The different between the absolute pressure and the atmospheric pressure.
Formula for pressure?
P=F/A
What is the pressure in a fluid of uniform density at rest?
P2-P1 = -density*g(Y2-Y1)
The pressure difference between points one and two is proportional to the difference between elevations y1 and y2.
If the pressure at the surface of an incompressible liquid at rest is p0 then:
The pressure at depth h is greater by an amount density*gh
P = P0 + density*gh
What is Archimedes Principle (buoyancy)?
When a body is immersed in a fluid, the fluid exerts an upward buoyant force on the body equal to the weight of the fluid that the body displaces.
An ideal fluid is:
Incompressible
No viscosity
What is a flow line?
The path of a fluid particle.
What is a streamline?
Is a curve tangent at each point to the velocity vector at that point.
What is a flow tube?
A tube bounded at its sides by flow lines.
What flow is when layers of fluid slide smoothly past each other?
Laminar flow.
