Competition commission
An independent public body which conducts in depth inquiries into mergers, markets and the regulation of the major regulated industries. It has the powers to impose changes on the companies concerned or ban proposed mergers.
Office of Fair Trading (OFT)
Monitors changes in market structures and responds to complaints about anti-competitive activities. It also supervises many aspects of consumer protection law, e.g. Trade descriptions, which must give accurate information about the product.
EU competition policy
The main difference between competition law in the EU aNd in the UK is that the EU focuses on issues that cross European borders and the UK focuses on issues that arrive within the UK.
