Chapter 12 Flashcards
surgical repair of nerves
Neuroplasty
nerves that arise from the brain
Cranial nerves
second largest portion of the brain
located beneath posterior portion of cerebrum
this part of the brain aids in coordinating voluntary body movements and maintaining balance and equilibrium
attached to brain stem by pons
refines muscular movement that is initiated in cerebrum
Cerebellum
group of disabilities caused by injury to brain either before or during birth or very early in infancy
most common permanent disability in childhood
Cerebral Palsy (CP)
this portion of brain stem forms bridge between cerebellum and cerebrum
also where nerve fibers cross from one side of brain to control functions and movement of other side of brain
Pons
portion of brain stem that connects spinal cord with brain
contains respiratory, cardiac, and blood pressure control centers
Medulla oblongata
portion of brain stem
Midbrain
term meaning tough mother
is fibrous outermost meninges layer that forms a tough protective layer
Dura mater
term means soft mother
this thin innermost meninges layer is applied directly to surface of brain
Pia mater
delicate middle layer of meninges
Arachnoid layer
single projection of a neuron that conducts impulse away from nerve cell body
Axon
tissue that wraps around many nerve fibers
composed of fatty material and functions as insulator
Myelin
convoluted elevated portions of cerebral cortex
they are separated by fissures or sulci
singular is gyrus
Gyri
also called fissures
grooves that separate gyri of cerebral cortex
singular is sulcus
Sulci
fluid filled spaces within cerebrum
contains cerebrospinal fluid which is watery clear fluid that provides protection from shock or sudden motion to brain
Ventricles
point at which axon of one neuron meets dendrite of next neuron
Synapse
cerebrovascular accident (CVA) development of an infarct due to loss in the blood supply to an area of the brain
Stroke
one sided facial paralysis with unknown cause
person cannot control salivation, tearing of eyes, or expression
patient will eventually recover
Bell’s Palsy
this area of the brain has three components: medulla oblongata, pons, and midbrain
is pathway for impulses to be conducted between brain and spinal cord
contains centers that control respiration, heart rate, and blood pressure
in addition, 12 pairs of cranial nerves begin here
Brain Stem
profound unconsciousness resulting from illness or injury
Coma
responsible for coordinating all the activity of the body
Nervous system
the nervous system is subdivided into the
Central nervous system
and
peripheral nervous system
the central nervous system consists of the
brain and spinal cord
the nerves of the peripheral nervous system are
cranial nerves
and
spinal nerves
