chapter 12 Flashcards
When instruments have been cleaned, they are transferred to the blank area of the SPD.
preparation and packaging area
2 other names for preparation and packaging area.
prep and pack or assembly area
What is the preparation and packaging area?
It is where instruments are inspected to ensure they are clean and in good working order before they are packaged for sterilization.
When incidents are detected from a defective or unclean instrument, what can occur
delays can occur
When defective or unclean instruments are not detected, risk to the patients…
increase
Like other areas in the SPD, blank is critical in the assembly area.
attention to detail
What plays a critical role in keeping the prep and pack area clean and free of contaminants?
Airflow
Air pressure in the prep and pack area should be…
positive
What is the purpose of a positive airflow in the prep and pack area?
The purpose of a positive airflow is to ensure that when the doors to the prep and pack area are opened, air flows outward instead of into the work area.
positive airflow reduces the risk of blank being introduced into the area.
airborne bacteria
Maintaining proper temperature is
critical
Why must all fixtures, worktables and furniture be constructed of non-porous, easy-to-clean materials?
to reduce the number of bacteria in the area
In addition to routinely cleaning surfaces, care must be taken to minimize blank in the area.
dust and lint
workstations should be cleaned at least blank each shift and as they become blank.
once
soiled
When lint is introduced into the sterile field, it can settle into a wound and cause?
Infection
SPDs should make every effort to minimize?
lint
Good cleaning practices and compliance with attire and EVS protocols can reduce
lint and the chance of it entering the OR.
Hand Hygiene should be performed blank in this area.
Frequently
What 2 things are essential for preventing microorganisms and contaminants from entering the work area.
Personal Cleanliness and Adherence to dress code
Why can you not wear nail polish and artificial nails in the prep and pack area?
because there is a potential for nail polish to chip and artificial nails to fall off.
what can hinder effective handwashing? and why
long nails because they can harbor bacteria
All head and facial hair (except for eyebrows and eyelashes) should be completely covered with
a surgical-type hair covering
Any type of jewelry should not be worn in the area because
they can harbor microorganisms
beard and mustaches must be covered using an
approved beard cover
All staff members in the area must monitor their blank and change blank if it becomes soiled.
cleanliness
scrub attire
SP technicians should not bring items into the area that may contaminate hands. what are some examples? (3)
money
personal items
personal electronics
what is not allowed in the preparation and packaging area? and why?
Food and drinks because they can attract insects and rodents.
When facility-issued electronics are brought into the department; these devices should be cleaned according to the
device manufacturer’s instructions for use (IFU) and facility policy before being brought into the SPD.
Cleaning these devices and implementing hand hygiene reduces the numbers of blank present on the devices.
microorganisms
The work area in preparation and packaging should be
adequately sized and readily available to perform inspection, testing and assembly duties.
The work area should be routinely cleaned to reduce
bacteria and lint
The first goal is to create a pack that meets
user’s needs
When assembling any pack for sterilization, remember the “FAN’ principle. All items must be
functional, accurate and neat
What is Functional in the terms of “FAN”
Functional means that each item in the pack must function as it was designed to function. so, scissors should be sharp, clamps must hold securely, and multi-part items must be complete.
What is Accurate in the terms of “FAN”
Accurate means that instruments must be correct, and quantities must be exact.
What is Neat in the terms of “FAN”
Neat means that pack contents must be organized, and instruments must be easy to locate.
