Chapter 12 Flashcards
Regression / trend line
a straight line that attempts to predict the relationship between two points.
simple linear regression
is a prediction when a variable (y) is dependent on a second variable (x) based on the regression equation of a given set of data.
scatter plot
a graph of ordered pairs showing a relationship between two sets of data.
Finding regression line using graphing calculator
- set to stats
- stat> edit> add lists
- stat plot settings
- stat> calc> 4
Regression analysis
study of 2 variables in an attempt to find a relationship, or correlation.
Chi-square test
used to compare expected data vs collected data
(o-e)^2/e
o = observed
e = expected
statistically significant
did not occur by chance
p <= .05
Null hypothesis
the prediction that there is no interaction between variables
Degrees of freedom
df = n - 1
Dot plot
A visual representation of data using intervals or categories of variables; the dots represent an observation in the data
Used to analyze frequency in a data distribution
How to create a histogram
Crest 90 degree x and y axis( looks like bar graph)
Box plot
A graphical representation of the distribution in the data set using the quartile minimum and maximum values on a number line.
How to create a box plot
Box - inter-quartile range. Left line is lower quartile range and right line is upper. One in the middle is the median.
Dash on left is extreme minimum and dash on right is extreme maximum.
Line from extreme min to max is range.
Find all values then Draw box plot and fill in lines.
Null hypothesis.
Based on chance. How you expect things to work or go without bay external factors.
Alternative hypothesis.
Shows a change from the null hypothesis that is caused by something.
