Chapter 11.1 Flashcards
Interstellar matter
Made up of gas (mostly hydrogen) and dust
Star
Object made of hot gases with a core like a thermonuclear reactor
Low mass star
Small, dim, cool red dwarf
Burn slowly
Last 100 million years
Intermediate mass stars
Burn faster than low mass stars
Live 10 billion years
At the end becomes red giant then white dwarf then black dwarf
High mass stars
Burn fast and die in only 7 billion years
Die as a supernova which can then become a black hole or a neutron star
Supernova
Explosion which happens when a high mass star dies
Spreads heavy elements through space
Black hole
Happens when supernova collapses in on itself
High density with an extraordinary amount of gravity. Not even light escapes!
Neutron star
Supernova collapses but doesn’t have enough mass to become a black hole
Cores are very very hot and can take trillions of years to cool
Luminosity
How bright something is
Determined by the amount of energy given off
Hertzsprung-Russell diagram
Shows the relationship between luminosity and temperature/colour
Doppler effect
Change in wavelength because of motion
