Chapter 1.1 What is Earth Science Flashcards
What is Geology?
The study of the origin, history, and structure of the solid earth.
What is earth science?
The study of the earth and the universe around it.
What is oceanography?
The study of earth’s oceans.
What is meteorology?
The study of earth’s atmosphere.
What is Astronomy?
The study of the universe beyond earth.
What is the geosphere?
The solid earth.
What is the hydrosphere?
The earth’s water.
What is the atmosphere?
The gasses surrounding the earth.
What is ecology?
The study of the complex relationships between living things and their environment.
What is an ecosystem?
A community of organisms and the environment the inhabit.
What is the biosphere?
The largest ecosystem- encompasses all life on earth and the physical environment that supports it. Starts from the ocean’s bottom and goes to a few kilometers above earth’s surface.
What is pollution?
The contamination of the environment with waste products or impurities.
What is biodegradable?
The ability to be broken down into harmless substances by microorganisms.
What are the four major branches of ecology?
Geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy.
Describe the work of meteorologists.
Meteorologists study variations in the earth’s atmospheric conditions.
