Chapter 11- Voting Behaviour And The Role Of The Media Flashcards
In 1983 how did under 24 year olds vote. Why is this significant?
42% voted Tory
33% voted Lab
Difficult to tell how young people would vote, so she not as significant back then
How did 18-24s vote in 2019. Give one reason why
56% voted labour, and labour enjoyed a plurality or support amongst all ages under 39. Commitment to cutting tuition fees
What % of over 60s voted Tory in 2019
57%
Give one statistic that shows age as the most important factor in voting behaviour
Cross over age was 39 in 2019. For every 10 years someone aged, the likelihood of them voting lab decreased by 8% points
One reason why region is the most important factor
After 2015 when the SNP crushed labour’s previous dominance, by winning 56 of the 59 available seats it is obvious that people in Scotland viewed the SNP as the best party to represent their interests.
A statistic that shows region as an important factor in voting behaviour
If you leave aside London, the Tories have fewer MPs from cities than the SNP- who only stand in one part of the country
Another reason why region is an important factor
Regional voting patterns that were starting to be present in the EU ref are now very distinct, with the Cons doing well in rural and former labour safe seats, while labour continued to dominate in cities regardless of Corbyn’s approval ratings.
What undermines region as the most important factor
It is too closely linked to the economic conditions there.
What was class voting like in the 1964 election?
Lab’s Harold Wilson won 64% of DE votes while 78%of AB voters chose Douglas-Home and the Tories
How has class based voting been undermined since ~2015
By class dealignment and issue based voting (Brexit), resulting in partisan dealignment. In 2017, 41% of DE voters voted Tory and 44% for labour and in 2019 the Cons enjoyed a plurality of support amongst all social classes.
How might class still be important
The Tory campaigns in 2017 and 2019 targeted “left behind towns” who were worse off. This is responsible for labour’s embarrassing lost.
Why is class still important especially after 2016
The WC support from “left behind towns” has been immensely important in allowing the Cons to get a majority in the HoC. Class was a great i dictator of how someone would vote in the EU ref and the Cons capitalised on this
