Free State
A state that doesn’t permit slavery.
Slave state
A state that does permit slavery.
Missouri Compromise
An agreement worked out by congress in 1820 that allowed Missouri to enter the union as a slave state and Maine as a free state; a line drawn western from Missouri’s southern boundary marked the territory north of which slavery was not allowed.
Caucus
Any political group or meeting organized to further a special interest or cause.
Mud-Slinging
The practice of attaching another candidate and trying to damage that persons reputation by making malicious or untrue charges.
Spoils system
The practice of appointing people to public office based on personal loyalty and party service.
Treason
The crime of trying to overthrow the government.
Nullifiers
A group in favor of nullification.
Unionists
States rights and Union party opposed nullifiers.
Capital
Seat of government for a state or nation.
Test Oath
An oath of loyalty to ones country.
Sectionalism
An exaggerated loyalty to ones own area rather than to ones country as a whole.
