Chapter 11: The Nervous System Flashcards
What are the three divisions of the nervous system?
- Central Nervous system
- Peripheral NS
- Enteric NS
The CNS consists of the
Brain and spinal cord
The PNS includes
The nervous tissue outside the CNS except for the ENS
The Somatic nervous system (voluntary nervous system)
Allows us to consciously control our movement
The autonomic nervous system (involuntary nervous system)
Automatically regulates activities
The motor (efferent) divison of the PNS carries
Motor commands from the CNS to peripheral tissues and systems
Sensory receptors
Detect position, touch, pressure, pain and temperature.
Receptors are
Sensory structures that detect changes in the internal or external enviroment
Effectors are
Target organs and tissues that respond to neural motor commands
The parasympathetic and sympathetic include
- Smooth muscle
- Cardiac muscle
- Glands
- Adipose tissue
Dendrites
- Highly branched
- CNS neurons receive most of the info at the dendritic spines
The axon contains
- The axon hillock
- Initial segment
- Axolemma
- Axoplasm
The axon hillock
Origin of the axon from the cell body
The initial segment
Where an action potential is initiated
The axolemma
A specialized portion of the plasma membrane that surrounds the cytoplasm
