Chapter 11: Sense Organs Flashcards
Name some of our sense organs.
Eyes, ears, tongue, nose and skin.
Name some senses of our body.
Balance, body movements, hunger, thirst and pain, etc.
Define Receptors.
Receptor is any specialized tissue or cell sensitive to a specific stimulus.
Name the types of receptors which perceives different senses.
1.Photoreceptors
2.Phonoreceptors
3.Chemoreceptors
4.Thermoreceptors
5.Mechanoreceptors
Define Photoreceptors.
Photoreceptors are rods and cones of the retina of the eye. These are sensitive to light (dim and bright light respectively) and are responsible for vision.
Define Phonoreceptors.
Phonoreceptors are located in the inner ear. These are sensitive to sound and are responsible for hearing and balance.
Define Chemoreceptors.
Chemoreceptors are present in the tongue and nose. These are sensitive to chemical substances and are responsible for taste and smell.
Define Thermoreceptors.
Thermoreceptors are temperature sensing receptors present in the skin and nose. These are sensitive to relative changes in the temperature and are responsible for our body feeling hot or cold.
Define Mechanoreceptors.
