A

The legal and religious agreement between two people who love each other.

What is Sex?

A

Sex is the act of physically showing love between the two people who are married. Outside of the church, it could also be for pleasure though is very discouraged by the church and looked down upon.

A

When two people love each other, they want to devote themselves to each other, and consummate the marriage through sex

A

When you have sex to complete the marriage.

What is unitive sex?

A

When two people have sex to be united and brings them together

What is Procreational sex?

A

Procreation is when you have sex to make new life. Technically, this is the only type of sex recognised by the church as acceptable because they believe that every time you have sex, it should be to make new life and only that.

What is human sexuality?

A

A person’s expression of love and their identity. For example, if someone is homosexual, they like people of the same gender and if they are bisexual they like both genders. People might also identify as something that biologically, they are not they. For example a man identifying as a woman or vice versa.

What is heterosexuality?

A

When a person loves another person of the opposite gender. So if a boy loves a girl and if a girl loves a boy. Colloquially, this is called ‘straight’.

What is homosexuality?

A

When a person loves another person of the same gender so if a boy likes a boy or a girl likes a girl. Colloquially, this is called ‘gay’ or ‘lesbian’.

What is transgendered?

A

When someone identifies as the opposite gender and lives their life that way. So, if a boy is born as a boy biologically but identifies as a girl, she lives her life as a girl and could live under the title of Mrs, Miss or Ms.

What is meant by ‘types of love’?

A

That there are different types of love and emotions that are for different people. For example, you wouldn’t show sexual love for your friends but you would show respect and humour instead.

‘Eros’ love?

A

Eros love is Sexual love. This is encouraged only when a couple are married.

‘Agape’ love?

A

Agape love is Careless and selfless love. This could come in many different ways, such as volunteering at community events, or helping at a charity. This would also be incorporated in other types love as you would put some people, such as friends before yourself and that is selfless.

‘Storge’ love?

A

Storge is Family love. This is the love, and respect you show your parents and siblings as well as extended family.

A

What is an annulment?

A

This is when people decide to say, in law, that the marriage never happened.
Note - there are grounds for annulments and they are complicated. It could be that the conditions were breached. So, for example they were intoxicated when they did it or, surprisingly, they never consummated the marriage.

Separation?

A

When a married couple decide to move away from each other and live in different accommodation

Consummation?

A

The act of sealing a marriage with sex. This is only recognised when the two people are married. If you do not consummate the marriage, it could be grounds for an annulment.

Remarriage?

A

Marrying again after a marriage has ended.
Note - after an annulment, you cannot say ‘remarried’ because the marriage never took place. In theory, you can never remarry in the Catholic church because divorce is banned.

What are the ‘2 greatest commandments’?

  1. ‘Love God with your whole heart, mind, body, and soul.

Adultery?

A

When a spouse has sex outside of their exclusive relationship.

Fornication

A

Having sex outside of marriage, when you are both unmarried. When 1 or 2 of you are married that counts as adultery.

Nuptial blessing?

A

A blessing a priest says over a newlywed couple to ask God to bless them. This is the main part of a wedding, with the Father ‘giving’ his daughter away to be married and the the signing of the register at the end.

Cohabitation?

A

Living with your partner / fiancé when you’re not married yet. This may be done to help financially, or to see whether you are ready to move in or marry yet.

What do all of the different formats of love have in common?

A

They are not exclusively love. They are respect and emotion towards them. For example, ‘Philos’ love is not that you love your friend, it’s that you have a laugh with your friend, that you support them.
