Chapter 11: PDL Flashcards
What is the primary function of the Periodontal Ligament?
The primary function of the ligament is support of the teeth. It also transmits input to the masticatory apparatus and has a nutritive function that is essential to maintaining the ligament’s health.
What is the PDL made of and where is it located?
The periodontal ligament is a fibrous connective tissue between the alveolar bone proper and the cementum covering the tooth root. It occupies the periodontal space.
Mesial and/or distal drifting is a result from which fiber group?
Transseptal fibers
What are the principal fibers of the Periodontal Ligament?
Gingival fibers
Name 4 Gingival fibers
Free gingival fibers
Attached gingival fibers
Alveolar crest
Circular or circumferential fibers
Where do transseptal fibers originate from and what are their functions?
Originate in the cervical region of each crown and extend to mesial and distal surfaces of each adjacent tooth. Functions in resistance to the separation of each tooth.
What is the difference between gingival and dentoalveolar fibers?
Gingival group of fibers are located around the necks of the teeth.
The dentoalveolar group of fibers surround the roots of the teeth.
