Chapter 11 Part 3 Flashcards
Presynaptic neurons send __
Postsynaptic neurons send __
Presynaptic: send impulses toward synapse (send information)
Postsynaptic: transmit electrical signal away from synapse (receive information)
4 types of circuits
Diverging
Converging
Reverberating
Parallel after-discharge
Diverging circuit has
One input, many outputs
Christmas tree shaped
Converging circuit has
Many inputs, one output
Looks like +
Reverberating circuit:
Signal travels through chain of neurons, each feeding back to previous neuron
(Looks like chain)
Parallel after-discharge circuit:
Signal stimulates neurons arranged in parallel lines that all go to one output cell
(Looks like merging traffic)
Axodendritic connection:
Between axon terminals of one neuron and the dendrites of other neurons
(Look like they’re holding hands)
Axosomatic connection:
Between axon terminals of one neuron and soma (cell body) of other neurons
(Axon goes to middle of cell)
Most common type of synapse
Chemical synapse
Na+ influx greater than K+ efflux results in
EPSP
Two types of summations:
Temporal
Spatial
Temporal summation:
One or more presynaptic neurons rapid-fire impulses
Impulses add on top of first impulse
