Chapter 11: Magnetic Forces and Fields Flashcards
How do magnetic fields differ from electric fields?
Magnetic fields make loops from north to south outside the magnet and south to north inside the magnet. Magnetic fields to not extend to infinity.
What is the unit for the magnetic force?
Newtons (N), like all forces.
What is the unit for magnetic fields?
Tesla (T)
Are all metals magnetic?
No, only iron, nickel, cobalt, and their alloys (mixes including those metals).
How do you magnetize something?
If the material can be magnetized, placing it in a strong magnetic field will magnetize it.
How do you de-mangetize something?
Heat it up or otherwise deform it (drop it, hit it, etc.).
What are the two things that create magnetic fields?
Permanent magnets and moving charged particles (such as electricity).
What can you calculate using the Biot-Savart Law?
The magnetic field at some location created by a moving charged particle.
How do you determine the direction of a vector resulting from a cross product?
By using the Right Hand Rule or the Triangle Method.
What does a velocity selector do?
By subjecting a charged particle to opposing forces, only particles with a particular velocity will experience zero force and emerge from the velocity selector.
