Chapter 11- Lipids Flashcards

1
Q

Lipid definition

A

Water insoluble molecules that are highly soluble in organic solvents

  • widely used to store energy
  • key components of membranes
  • do not form polymers
  • non covalent assemblies

Q

The 5 classes of lipids

A
  1. Free fatty acids: simplest commonly used as fuel; hydrocarbons which terminate with carboxylic acid groups
  2. Triacylglycerols: storage form
  3. Phospholipids: macromolecule with a polar head and nonpolar tail
  4. Glycolipids: bound to carbohydrates important to membranes
  5. Steroids: polycyclic hydrocarbons functioning as hormones. Common: cholesterol
