Androgynous
refers to a combination of feminism and masculine traits

Doing Gender
the idea that people act to create and assert their gender rather than an innate quality that people are born with (people do gender in how they walk, dress etc)
Double Bind
A situation in which negative consequences ensue regardless of the choice that is made

peole who identify with more than one gender and easily shift between them

one’s sense of being a girl/woman, boy/man or some other gender

an umbrella term that includes anyone whose sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression deviates from the gender binary

the process of which people learn societal belifes and norms related to gender
Gender Status
ones position in the social structure based on gender (girl boy)
Glass Ceiling
discriminatory practices that limit opportunities for women and other minority groups to rise to higher levels in their careers or to qualify for promotions and earn higher salaries
Glass escalator
an occupational setting in which the dominant group (men) enjoys a distinct advantage
Hegemonic Masculinity
the privileged, dominant expression of masculinity in a society
Homosocial reproduction
the tendency of elite men to select candidates for advancement who are most like themselves,

more subtle way of expressing prejudice towards women.
Nonbinary
a gender category that describes those who reject the oppositional sex and gender categories of men/woman
Rape culture
belifes, values and norms that encourage condone and minimize the rape of girls and women by boys and men
Pink collar
occupations that are mostly held by women and usually low in pay and prestige
sex
physical or biological characteristics such as genitalia, hormones and chromosomes that are used to classify people as female, male or intersex
sexual scripts
expectations for people’s behavior in romantic or sexual situations often related to gender norms
Transgender
people who have a gender identity different from their assigned sex
