Great Famine
A period in Europe in 1315-1322 where crop harvests were generally poor following a period of climate change, leading to starvation and scarcity of crops that were depended upon.
Black Death
A plague that came to Europe in 1347 and killed approximately one-third of the population.
flagellants
People who believed that the plague was a punishment from God for their sins. So, they whipped themselves in order to do penance.
Hundred Years’ War
A war between England and France from 1337-1453 that had economic and political causes and outcomes.
representative assemblies
Meetings of lords and wealthy people that took place in many European countries from 1250-1450.
Babylonian Captivity
A period from 1309 to 1376 when the popes lived in Avignon instead of Rome.
Great Schism
A split in church leadership in 1378-1417 where two, and later three, popes ruled.
conciliarists
People who believed that the Roman Church’s leadership should be in a general council of clergy, theologians, and laypeople, rather than only being in the pope.
confraternities
Voluntary lay groups that are organized by occupation, devotional preference, neighborhood, or charitable activity.
Jacquerie
A huge uprising from French peasants in 1358 caused by heavy taxes from the Hundred Years’ War falling on the poor.
English Peasants’ Revolt
A revolt in 1381 from English peasants that was a response to changing economic conditions.
Statute of Kilkenny
A law that was issued in 1366 that was discriminatory against Irish people, as it forbademarriage between English and Irish people, requiring the use of the English language, and forbade Irishmen from accessing ecclestial offices.
