Chapter 1.1 Equilibrium in the biosphere Flashcards
Dynamic equilibrium
a state of balance between continuing processes
energy coming in ans out equally
Biosphere
The regions of the surface, atmosphere and hydrosphere of the earth occupied by living organisms
Biotic
Relating or resulting from living things, especially in their ecological relations
Abiotic
Physical rather than biological; not derived from living organisms
contributes to an organisms survival
Populations
a group of organisms of one species that interbreed and live in the same place at the same time (genetically linked) for example the Bickley or Resendes population
Community
An ecological unit composed of a group of organisms and their physical environement
Ecosytem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment
Biodiversity
The variety of life in the world or in a world or in a particular habitat or ecosytem
Food chain
Shows how each living thing gets food and how energy and nutrients are passed from creature to creature or plant
Food web
Less organised version of a food chain for example hawk eats fox and fox also eats hawk
Producer
Make their own food (also known as autographs) They take energy from the sun or chemicals and with the help of water convert it into glucose or food (energy)
Consumer
a person or thing that eats or uses
Endangered species
a species of animal or plant that is seriously at risk of extinction
Indicator species
Species that tell/show us if the habitat that they are living in is habitable and/or safe
Herbivore
an animal that feeds solely on plants
