Chapter 11 - Engine Fundamentals Flashcards
A removable piece of sacrificial soft metal that fits between a shaft journal and a mating component, such as the engine block or connecting rod end. Because it is softer than the components it protects, it absorbs wear that would otherwise occur between the surfaces of the mating components.
bearing insert
The point of travel where a piston is at the lowest point in the cylinder
bottom dead center, BDC
A component in an OHC engine that is moved by the camshaft lobe and operates the valve. Valve lifter or tappet.
Cam follower
A shaft with offset lobes used to operate the valve train
Camshaft
Mechanisms designed to transfer the rotational motion of a crankshaft smoothly to the camshaft(s) at one-half to engine speed. There are three types: timing gears, a timing chain and sprockets, or a timing belt and pulleys.
Camshaft drive
An area at the top of the cylinder where a spark plug ignites the compressed air fuel mixture
combustion chamber
The top set of piston rings designed to seal between the piston and cylinder to prevent escape of gases from the combustion chamber
compression rings
The portion of the pistons movement devoted to compressing the fuel mixture in the cylinder
compression stroke
The connecting link between the crankshaft and the piston
Connecting rod
Inserts that fit into the connecting rod and ride on the crankshaft journal
connecting rod bearing
A round metal and rubber device mounted to a crankshaft to minimize vibration. Also referred to as a harmonic balancer or vibration damper.
crank damper
The main shaft that supports the connecting rods and turns piston reciprocation into rotary notion
crankshaft
a seal that prevents oil from leaking out of the front and rear of an engine
crankshaft oil seal
a bore in the engine block that has a set depth and diameter and contains a piston
cylinder
a metal structure that is bolted to the top of an engine block. It contains combustion chambers and various valve train components.
