Chapter 11: Emotions, Aggression, and Stress Flashcards
james-lange theory
emotions are caused by bodily experience
cannon-bard theory
the cerebral cortex simultaneously decides on the appropriate emo experience and activates the autonomic nervous system to appropriately prepare the body
schacter-singer
our emo states are the results of interaction btw physiological arousal and cognitive interpretation of that arousal
facial-feedback hypothesis
the idea that sensory feedback from our facial expressions can affect our mood
nucleus accumbens
a region of the forebrain that receives dopaminergic innervation from the VTA, often assoc with reward and pleasurable sensations
decorticate rage
sudden intense rage characterized by actions that lack clear direction
limbic system
a loosely defined, widespread group of brain nuclei that innervate each other to forma netowrk
Kluver-Bucy syndrome
a condition brought about by bilaterial amygdala damage that is characterized by dramatic emo changes including reduction in fear and anxiety
low road emotional processing
stimuli –> sensory organ –> thalamus –> amygdala ; bypasses conscious processing and allows for immediate reactions to fearful stimuli
high road
stimuli –> sensory organ –> thalamus –> sensory cortex and thalamus –> amygdala
VMH
a hypothalamic region involved in sexual behaviors, eating and aggression
epinephrine
a compound that acts as both a hormone and as a synaptic transmitter
norepinephrine
produced and released by sympathetic postganglionic neurons to accelerate organ activity
