Clauses joined by subordinating conjunctions follow one of two word order patterns. 1. When the sentence begins with the main clause, that clause has regular word order (verb second in statements) and the dependent clause introduced by the conjunction has dependent word order (conjunction after comma and verb last). 2. When the sentence begins with a dependent clause, the entire dependent clause is considered the first part of the main clause and occupies first position. The verb-second rule applies, then moving the subject of the main clause after the verb. Common SC's: when, before, until so that after whether, if although während because, since if, when
