Chapter 11- Alkenes Flashcards

Q

What are electrophiles?

Describe what electrophiles do?

Give three examples of electrophiles?

A

Electron pair acceptors

They’re usually a bit short of electrons so they’re attracted to areas where there are lots of them about

  • Positively charged ions, like H+ and NO2+
  • Polar molecules- the f+ atom is attracted to places with lots of electrons.

Q

What is the test for a double bond in an alkene (ie test for unsaturation)?

Describe how this reaction happens?

What is this reaction called?

What is the colour change for this reaction?

A

Shake an alkene with orange bromine water. If double bond present, the solution turns colourless

Bromine is added across the C=C double bond to form a colourless dibromoalkane

Electrophiles addition

Orange to colourless solution.

Q

Why are carbocations with more alkyl groups more stable?

A

Because the alkyl groups feed electrons towards the positive charge. Therefore the more stable carbocation is much more likely to form.
