Chapter 11 Flashcards
Blast furnace
Used to convert iron ore into pig iron
Gas stirring
A refining technique that consists of bubbling gases such as nitrogen or argon through the ladle, which promotes the floatation and removal of nonmetallic materials.
Iron making
First stage in the manufacture of steel.
Merchant mill
A relatively small steelmaking speciation that produces a limited range of finished forms from scrap steel.
Mining
extraction of valuable minerals or other geographical materials from earth from the ore body, lode, vein, seam, or reef which forms the mineralized pkg. of economic interest
Ores
rocks and minerals from which metallic elements can be economically extracted
Overburden
describe dirt, soil & rock that must be cleared during mining operations to gain access to valuable ore body
Slab
A rectangular shaped, semi-finished form that has a width to thickness ratio 2:1 or greater.
Billet
A square-shaped, semifinished form that is less than 20 cm x 20 cm (8” x 8”)
Finished form
A metal product that is shaped into its final form by working an ingot or continuous casting.
Discontinuity
An interruption in the normal physical structure of a component
Cold working
Plastic deformation performed below the recrystallization temperature, which leads to word hardening. Includes cold rolling, cold drawing, and cold extrusion.
